To explain how this project got started is, well, quite a task to take on. It has been a long trip, filled with surprise surrounded by hard work, and yes I might even go as far to say an “emotional roller coaster” Okay, now you can see I’m already way ahead of myself.
I was living in Brooklyn going to film school, it was the hot beginning of August when I was strolling down 2nd avenue and ran into Gadi. Sprawled out before my eyes were the most beautiful, honest pieces of artwork I had seen. I ha d never encountered such creative political passion before my eyes…dozen of stencils and a huge drop cloth to prevent the paint from occupying the already colorful sidewalk. I immediately started talking to him about Obama- it was as if two complete strangers on that new york avenue had unified in that moment over the polices and hopes of a candidate like Barack Obama. Little did we know we would soon be living with each other traveling across the country for five weeks. At the time I was telling him of my sisters passion and how she had stickerd her old Volvo wagon in over 500 Barack Obamsa bumber stickers- which became famously known as the “ObamaMobile” (www.obamamobileusa.com)
The Democratic National Convention was around the corner- I would be done with school soon, and be flying back to my hometown in Santa Cruz, California. My sister and I had a goal to drive the ObamaMobile back to the DNC…but with gas prices rising and the economy making an invisible disappearance- we had no idea how we would fund the trip.
Luckily I am constantly thinking of good ideas, and I had a killa one- so good, that in fact I called up the “stranger” I had met on the street earlier that week. I asked him if we could use the stencils to sell Obama T-Shirts, to fund our travels to Denver, and be apart of the DNC.
This is the seed that planted one of the country’s largest grassroots campaign to ever take place.
After the success of the ObamaMobile at the DNC, Gadi and I kept in touch- he was also at the Democratic Convention…so we were able to chill and he soon became a great friend.
After the Democratic National Convention, being at invesco, hearing Obama speak…well it just lit something inside me, something I couldn’t put out, it started as a small flame and grew bigger and bigger- till one day I picked up the phone and called Gadi. I told him my sister felt the responsibility’s of going back to work but that I was young and outta my mind and wanted to continue with a grassroots effort, combining artwork and traveling…something big. To my utter shock, he shared the same kind of reckless abandon to leave his job, friends, and life behind to crusade for a man that we both knew and believed was our only hope for a better world.
From there, it was a collaboration of ideas that bound wildly back and forth till we were able to wrestle them down and turn it into a reality.
The fact is this is America. And we can do whatever we want. Or we should at least. That’s the point. It started with a cartoon/drawing of the bus and what the graphic would look like- on paper it was a joke for allot of people. So instead of finding solid fiscal sponsor- we pooled out lifesavings together and bought a bus off craigslist. Painted it. And set out for the road. We had some money to make it to Nevada…but we trusted the selling of our Spray Painted T’s to make it the other 7,000 miles. And guess what, it worked. We listened to first time voters humble declaration of why they were voting for Obama. We stayed in homes that were open up to us, accompyied with warm meals, support, and encouragement for the long road ahead of us. Our route was chosen by what swing state to roll to next. Our shirts were made by young and the old. The experiences we faced in this monumental paradigm shift in American history, we will hold close not only to our minds, but our spirit- which has been lifted with a new hope that fills the air across this land, we call the U S of A.
So that’s as much as I can explain- if your still not feeling me, then don’t take my word for it- but hey, look around on the site. Check out our PHOTOS! PRESS! VIDEOS! And much more…
What’s next for the BamaBus?
Along the journey, Filmmaker Frederik Boll was along the way to capture over 60 hours of footage. Which will be turned into a Documentary. The Trailer is out now…so check out what were working on! Stay tuned for updates!
